MW3: at War with Hackers

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has gone to war with the dirty little hackers. Once you may have played a on-line game, and came across a guy who was flying or hiding in a rock. Most of these people are hackers and cheaters gaining an unfair advantage over us normal people. Well Activision says no more banning over 1600 people in the first few weeks of release:

”Any attempt to cheat, hack or glitch in MW3 will no be tolerated”, says creative strategist Robert Bowling on twitter. ”1600+ bans issued. Updates in works. Please cont. to report offenders.”

The hackers seemed to have gained the ability to exit the on-line map and hide in ‘unauthorised’ places.

”We will verify reports with in-game stats, in-game video recordings and other data to verify you were cheating” Robert bowling tweeted.

The bans have affected both PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 users. Rival game ‘Battlefield 3’ has had to ban players who found ways to gain thousands of points in matches.

A few people have now told me that most FPSs are a waste of time. To a degree they are right. If you take Modern Warfare 3 as an example then they would apparently be right. People are getting a tad bored and annoyed, they are restless of the same FPS formula being rolled out year after year. They’re tired of the over the top ‘block buster’ campaigns. The tech is tired yet the numbers hold? Why is this? Is the FPS scene stuck on its last legs or is it just a simple case of familiarity?

It’s a bit of both, the single player has really lost its way. Some people would say ‘who cares about single player anyway?’ well I do, I still play it and I still buy it – I want what I pay for! The strange thing is that it used to be the other way around, go back a couple of years to the PS2 era and the multiplayer was barely worth a shoot. Goldeneye is a good example of this, the campaign is awesome but the multiplayer lacking in places – great game though.

Some of these newer titles seem to have an ‘anything goes approch’ which does bring new ideas to the scene. Plus they weren’t afraid to test players, it meant your were a beast if you completed that level, or got that challenge. I am told you only have to look at Bioshock and CoD 4  to see this. Recently Battlefield 3 set the modern game bench mark in the single player scene, with its great graphics and more realistic story. Although the problems are, along with most other FPSs is: a linear story and no chance to explore and the way you can’t take another route that is taken for granted in multiplayer. It’s just walk up to your objective marker, kill everything and remember to take cover to recharge your health. CoD has those constant spawning enemies! You may race through the campaign you won’t remember what happened.

Part of the problem has got to be the characters, they are unbelievable, are you seriously supposed to feel sad when that animated guy who you saved his life for finally dies? Yes, but it’s never sad. You only ever shoot the bad guys because ‘they’re bad guys’. The bad guys nearly always run to one prescribed spot and pop their head up every couple of seconds. Are they trying to go back to the last decade? Is it too much to ask for to have proactive and reactive enemies. As much as the jet sequence in Battlefield looked good and the submarine level in MW3 looks good but they might aswell have put non-interactive cut scenes in. What’s up with the ‘quick time events’ at the moment?

All in all, if you don’t care about the poor acting, storylines and the predictable AIs then it’s a great time to be an FPS fan. If not then just make sure you love the multiplayer!

Just a quick update!

A few things to blog about, but such little time. First Battlefield 3 has been out just over a week and has sold 5 million copies but Call of Duty Black ops sold that in its first day. So the analyst may be right Call of Duty just might outsell Battlefield 2-1.

Minecraft has won the GameCity video game arts prize! It is a pretty beautiful game – in a blocky sort of way. It was announced at the end of the GameCity video game culture festival in Nottingham! It won over other big titles like Valve’s Portal 2. ‘Its a great honour to be compared to those games’ Says Swedish creator Markus ‘Notch’ Persson. the game has been bought over 4 million times world-wide even though it’s still a beta! Remember it is due out next month.

The Grand Thief Auto v (GTA) trailer is out. I don’t know much about GTA so I probably won’t be blogging about it.

007 Goldeneye: Reloaded comes out today for Europe. It stars Daniel Craig, with better graphics than the Wii version. A multiplayer is also included along with a story-line and a MI6 ops mode. For more info click this link.

Goldeneye 007 Reloaded – Another Remake

Goldeneye 007 Reloaded

I am a great 007 fan and so really enjoy the games. When I came across this Goldeneye game trailer, I might have got quite excited! Lets face it the previous Goldeneye games didn’t follow the story-line what so ever – like lots of other James Bond games. But in this trailer I saw a decent amount from the film – it is my favourite James Bond but this could just be my imagination and it could be yet another 007 game completely different from the film. So there could be light at the end of the tunnel. If you saw Goldeneye released on the Wii last year, and its shocking graphics then this game should look like crystal for you. The MI6 ops mode looks particularly intriguing it has 4 different mode within it, you will need to use stealth, assault, elimination and defence. When I saw the multiplayer side I felt a little let down, the FPS and graphics didn’t look as good as in solo. You can play 8-16 player games and there are more maps and weapons than before! All in all I am greatly looking forward to this game being released on November 1st 2011 for America and the November 4th for Europe. I hope you are looking forward to it!

Call of Duty: Double XP

For the first time ever there is double XP across the whole Call of Duty franchise, for the whole weekend, that’s Call of Duty 4, World at War, Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops. My advise is use this to prestige and in doing so you will get prestige tokens in MW3 which you can buy stuff with, like an extra create-a-class or special emblems. So in Mw3 you could start of with 6 create-a-class and be ahead of the game. Beat you friends!

Remember to comment on how much you are looking forward to the game:

The name’s Bond, James Bond

Back in the days of my PS2 I had many games. But the best of these has to be ‘007 Nightfire’. The story line has an almost CoD feel to it. You travel around the world to exotic locations, combining stealth and gadgets to complete missions. You get to drive and shoot from some of Bonds most iconic vehicles, including his Aston Martin V12 Vanquish. The story line has a lot of quite difficult missions, some where you will be stuck. But when you do get past them it feels all the better.

The 007 Nightfire game cover

This  game is from before the days of online Multiplayer however it makes up for this with ‘bots’ which you can play against with or without others (a bit like combat training on Black ops). The weapons are fun but not so realistic, some involving lasers but it did come out in 2002 so you have to let them off! This is a great game when played with a mate or two. So dig up those dusty PS2’s and revisit an old friend!
